BSL and Language Support
Accessible mediation for clients who use BSL or whose first language is not English.
Mediation Chambers welcomes clients who use British Sign Language (BSL) and clients whose first language is not English.
Mediation should be clear, fair and practical. Where language or communication support is needed, we can usually work with a professional independent interpreter or a qualified BSL interpreter so that each participant can understand the process, participate effectively, and make informed decisions throughout the mediation.
Any support arrangements are considered in advance so that the mediation can proceed properly, confidentially and fairly for everyone involved.
How support can be provided
Where appropriate, language or BSL support can be arranged for:
- Initial enquiries
- Pre-mediation discussions
- The mediation session
- Review of key documents
- Settlement discussions and final terms
To protect the integrity of the process, interpreters should normally be independent professionals. Friends, relatives, colleagues or other interested persons should not usually interpret in mediation.
What we may need to confirm in advance
Before the mediation goes ahead, we may need to confirm:
- The language, dialect or communication support required
- Whether a qualified BSL interpreter is needed
- Whether support is required for all stages or only part of the process
- Whether you already have an interpreter or need help arranging one
- That the interpreter is independent and willing to keep matters confidential
- That each participant can understand the mediation process and key documents
- That each participant has authority to negotiate and, where appropriate, settle
Timing and fees
Mediations involving interpreter or BSL support may require additional time and may involve additional cost.
Any interpreter arrangements, confidentiality requirements and fees will be discussed and agreed in advance wherever possible.
Requesting support
If you require language or BSL support, please tell us when you make your enquiry or complete the enquiry form.
We will then confirm whether the mediation can be arranged with the appropriate support in place.
